Ken McDevitt has over 15 years of experience in the numismatic auction business, previously serving as Managing Numismatist for Classical Numismatic Group (CNG), having taken over many of the responsibilities of former owner Victor England following the sale of the company in 2018. In his previous role, Ken McDevitt worked with consignors at every level to guarantee their collections were professionally and meticulously presented. His extensive experience in virtually every aspect of the auction business has left him well-prepared to helm the position of Director of Leu Numismatik USA, Inc.
In his early years in the business, Ken McDevitt was integral in developing the online auction platform. Within six years of working with his former company, he nearly tripled annual sales of their internet auctions. Since then, Ken McDevitt has been keenly focused on providing consignors with the absolute best experience. At Leu Numismatik USA, Ken McDevitt will use his knowledge and exceptional customer service skills to provide US and Canadian clients with the opportunity to consign their collections to one of the leading numismatic auction houses.
Born and raised in the Philadelphia area, Ken McDevitt earned a BA from Bloomsburg University and an MA from Boston University, where he studied under Professor Fred Kleiner, author of numerous important studies on Classical numismatics (most notably, The Early Cistophoric Coinage [ANS Numismatic Studies No. 14]). Always drawn to tangible aspects of history, Ken McDevitt studied at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and worked in museums and archives for several years prior to joining the coin trade, most recently at Harvard University’s Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology.
Ken McDevitt considers himself fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with such an incredibly large and diverse number of coins over the course of his career. As a result, he has very broad interests and can equally appreciate a crude academic rarity that enhances our knowledge of a particular subject as much as the coinages that represent the absolute best of numismatic art. Of particular interest to Ken McDevitt is the coinage of the Roman Near East and, especially, the complicated issue of coin production in Roman Syria. Ken McDevitt is also continually intrigued by the coinage of the Dynasts of Lycia and coin production in the western parts of the Byzantine Empire.
In discussing Leu’s expansion to the US, Yves Gunzenreiner, Lars Rutten and Ken McDevitt were in agreement that US and Canadian consignors deserve better options. Leu is very excited to be able to now offer its services to this clientele and present the overseas clients with the opportunity to consign individual coins or entire collections to the premier Web and Floor auctions, held in Winterthur and Zurich, Switzerland, in the heart of Europe. Naturally, Leu Numismatik USA will be handling export, transport and import of all consignments free of charge.
