For the first time since the outbreak of the Corona pandemic, a numismatic fair took place in Switzerland: Last Saturday, September 19, 2020, the 49th BERNA International Numismatics Exhibition was held in Bern. The fair, organised by the Numismatic Society of Bern, had originally been planned for May 23, but was postponed due to Corona. The current circumstances now allowed for the event to take place. The condition was the compliance with the protection concept and the common protective measures such as the compulsory wearing of face masks. After all, Switzerland is also currently seeing an increase in numbers again; two of Bern’s bordering cantons are considered an area of risk by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Given this situation, it is hardly surprising that the fair seemed to be less frequented than in previous years. Nevertheless, the fair was very well received. One could tell that visitors and dealers alike were thrilled to finally meet colleagues and like-minded people again and to be able to engage in a lively exchange. Only the observance of the social distancing rules at the dealers’ tables was clearly difficult for many a visitor in view of the tempting offers of small size.
The organisers demonstrated that it is possible to implement the required safety measures, which is encouraging for the future. This is also true for the 49th International Coin Fair Zurich, which is scheduled to take place on October 24 and 25, 2020, and as things stand at present, it will.
