On 24 November 2019, Franz Füeg died. Many coin collectors know him as one of the most important scholars of Byzantine numismatics. Only a few of them are aware that he was also one of the most distinguished architects of Switzerland.

For 40 years, Kurt Wyprächtiger curated the numismatic collection at the Museum zu Allerheiligen in Schaffhausen. From the unorganised material that he was confronted with when he started the job in 1980 he built up a systematic coin collection. Now, he steps down.

On 21 December 2019, American entrepreneur Joseph Segel died at the age of 88. He was the founder of numerous companies, most notably of QVC, an American teleshopping network, but also of The Franklin Mint, a private mint well-known among coin collectors.

After 49 years in the firm, Edward Baldwin retires from his work for A H Baldwin & Sons Ltd as the last of the Baldwin clan. He has prepared the firm for the present and future opening it up to the auction business and using computer technology.

Richard Weaver has been elected President of the Professional Numismatists Guild for the 2019–2021 term. In the past, he was the PNG Vice President. Now, the new president wants to refurbish the organization’s reputation as an “elite old boys club”.

The Bavarian numismatist Walter Grasser considered himself a mediator between coin museums, dealers and collectors. In the 70ies his books were numismatic bestsellers. Matthias Barth offers his congratulations on the occasion of Walter Grasser’s 80th birthday.

The ANA honored numismatists of outstanding merit at the Chicago World’s Fair of Money. Among them are Thomas Hallenbeck and George Kolbe.

Everyone who collected Byzantine coins had to do with Simon Bendall. He was a collector, dealer, scientist and profound expert of the subject. On 6 August 2019 we will bury the grandmaster of Byzantine numismatics.
