Naville Numismatics presents its Live Auction 72. The auction will close on Sunday 27th March 2022, 16:00 UK time, at which time the live session will begin. Absentee bidders can bid electronically through Naville Numismatics website from the day the sale is published online up to the start of the live session. The auction features a selection of 717 lots of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Medieval and Modern coins, all chosen with contribution from NAC’s experts.

The sale includes a selection of coins, including bronzes and fractions, from Magna Graecia, Sicily and Greece, some of them from the E.E. Clain-Stefanelli collection sold in association with Stacks Bowers Galleries.

Lot 96: Greek. Troas, Ilion Tetradrachm circa 183. Rare. minor porosity, Good Very Fine. Starting Price: £800.

This first section of the sale starts with a rare quadrans of Central Italy, a rare bronze of Ariminum, a well preserved obol of Arpi, a well preserved nomos of Tarentum, a very rare bronze of Thurium, a rare hemilitron of Atl, a rare bronze of the Sileraioi, an interesting tetradrachm of Syracuse, a rare bronze of Melita and an attractive series of beautiful coins of Tarentum, Croton, Syracuse, Abydos and Ilium, even beyond a selection of Hellenistic coins and a series of coins of Phoenicia, Judaea, Nabathea and Egypt.

Noteworthy in this section are a beautiful Punic tetradrachm, a well preserved tetradrachm of Lysimachus,a very rare drachm of Paros and an extremely rare tetradrachm of Ptolemy XII.

Lot 435: Roman Republic. C. Iulius Caesar. Denarius 44 BC. Rare. Extremely Fine. Illustrated in Alföldi. Privately purchased from Ratto in 1971. Starting Price: £1,500.

The Roman selection boasts an interesting series of Roman Republican bronzes and a striking array of denarii, some of them from an European collection and others with important provenances such as purchased from Ratto and De Nicola.

This includes a well preserved quadrigatus, an extremely rare triens of Anchor series without Anchor not cited by Crawford, a beautiful denarius of T. Veturius Gracchi f. Sempronius (Ex De Nicola 1970), a rare quinarius of L. Piso Frugi, a beautiful denarius serratus of C. Marius C.f. Capito (Ex Leu 1985), a rare and beautiful denarius of C. Iulius Caesar illustrated by Alföldi, a well preserved tetradrach of M. Antonius and a rare tetradrachm of M. Antonius and Cleopatra.

Lot 681: Constantius II, 337-361 Solidus Nicomedia circa 340-351. Variant not in RIC. Very rare. Extremely Fine. Starting Price: £500.

The Imperial selection of the sale features an attractive series of Augustus and also an attractive selection of Roman bronzes and silver coins such as a beautiful sestertius of Nero, an interesting sestertius of Domitian, a wonderful sestertius of Hadrian, an apparently unpublished denarius of Septimius Severus, a wonderful and in high relief denarius of Macrinus, a rare aureus of Constantius II a beautiful solidus of Gratian (Ex CNG mail bid sale 57, 2001, 1429), a rare solidus of Theodosius I (Ex Tkalec sale 18 February 2002, 264) and an interesting solidus of Valentinian III (Ex Gorny & Mosch sale 121, 2003, 530), even beyond an interesting selection of Solidi, Denari, Antoniniani, Sesterti, Dupondi, Asses and Folles.

Very remarkable in this part are an extremely rare aureus of Galba and a beautiful sestertius of Trajan (Ex Gorny & Mosch 138, 2005, NAC 95, 2016, 211 and NAC 125, 2021, 680 sales. From the Ploil collection).
