Naville Numismatics Live Auction 68

Naville Numismatics (NN) presents its Live Auction 68. The auction will close on Sunday 3rd October 2021, 16.00 UK time, at which time the live session will begin. Absentee bidders can bid electronically through Naville Numismatics website from the day the sale is published online up to the start of the live session. The auction features a selection of 608 lots of Greek, Roman, Byzantine coins, all chosen with contribution from NAC’s experts.

To minimize the disruption caused by Brexit, Naville cooperates with the recently opened NAC office in Brussels. From now on, all European Clients who prefer to receive their auction purchases directly from within Europe, are asked to inform the auction house, when registering for the sale, that they would like to place their bids through NAC Europe Srl. This company will represent any registered clients by proxy at Naville’s auctions, without applying any additional charges other than shipping costs (within Europe), and the Belgian Import VAT from outside EU, which is set at 6%.

Lot 31: Greek. Sicily, Syracuse. 30 Litrai or hemidrachm, c. 344-317 BC. Rare. Very fine. Starting Price: £450.

The sale includes a selection of coins, including bronzes and fractions, from Magna Graecia, Sicily and Greece, some of them from the E.E. Clain-Stefanelli collection sold in association with Stacks Bowers Galleries. This first section of the sale starts with a rare stater of the Ambiani, a well preserved triens of Tuder, an attractive series of rare and beautiful coins of Tarentum, Metapontum, Thurium, Caulonia, Syracuse and Athens, even beyond a series of coins from the BCD duplicates, a selection of Hellenistic coins. Noteworthy in this section are a rare 30 litrai or hemidrachm of Syracuse, a well struck tetradrachm of Philip II, a very rare stater of Ephesus and a scarce double siglos of Sidon.

Lot 302: Roman Republic. P. Satrienus. Denarius, c. 77 BC. An extremely rare variety with no numeral on obverse. Iridescent tone and Extremely Fine. Starting Price: £250.

The Roman selection boasts an interesting series of Roman Republican bronzes and a striking array of denarii. This includes a well struck denarius of C. Iunius C.f., a beautiful denarius of C. Terentius Lucanus, an interesting denarius of L. Licinius Crassus and Cn. Comitius Ahenobarbus, a beautiful denarius of Q. Antonius Balbus, a rare denarius of L. Cornelius Sulla Imperator, a well preserved denarius of P. Satrienus, a rare denarius of C. Egnatius Cn. F. Cn. N. Maximus, a very rare quinarius of Iulius Caesar and a beautiful cistophoric tetradrachm of M. Antonius and Octavia.

Lot 306: Roman Imperial. Marcus Aurelius Caesar (139 – 161). Aureus, 148-149, Rome mint. In a contemporary gold pendant with an openwork border and a ribbed suspension loop, on an ancient necklace. Extremely Fine. Starting Price: £2,500.

The Imperial selection of the sale features an attractive series of Augustus and also an attractive selection of Roman bronzes and silver coins, a dupondius of Livia, a semis of Tiberius, a rare as of Tiberius, a rare sestertius of Tiberius, a well preserved sestertius of Nero, a sestertius of Vespasian, a rare sestertius of Nerva, a beautiful sestertius of Trajan, a rare sestertius of Hadrian, a beautiful sestertius of Commodus and a rare denarius of Pescennius Niger, even beyond an interesting selection of Solidi, Denari, Antoniniani, Sesterti, Dupondi, Asses and Folles. Very remarkable in this part are an aureus of Nero with the Salus on reverse, an aureus of Titus and especially a very beautiful aureus of Marcus Aurelius caesar in a contemporary gold pendant.

Lot 586: France. Louis of Savoy (1458-1460). Grosso, 1458-1460. Rare. Old cabinet tone, one of the best specimens known. Extremely fine. Starting Price: £200.

The Medieval and Modern section includes a selection of interesting coins such as a grosso of Louis of Savoy and a paduan sestertius of Gaius from the Archer M. Huntington collection. The Roman Provincial part of the sale includes a selection from the Dattari Collection.
