The American Numismatic Society hosted its Long Table No. 83 on 4 March 2022. The topic of the online discussion was the Mark & Lottie Salton Collection, which is currently being auctioned by Stack’s Bowers Galleries and Fritz Rudolf Künker.
The Mark & Lottie Salton Collection: Jewish Entrepreneurs and the Beginning of the German Coin Trade
After an introduction by Ulrich Künker, Alexandra Elflein-Schwier shared her personal memories of the Salton couple. Fabian Halbich then explained how the Salton Collection came to Osnabrück. Vicken Yegparian presented highlights of the collection offered at Stack’s Bowers Galleries.
In her presentation, Ursula Kampmann showed which role the Salton couple and their collection had played in the Jewish coin trade in Germany. Her ground-breaking work shed light on numerous questions about the history of the German coin trade that had previously been unanswered. (You can also jump directly to Ursula Kampmann’s presentation via this link.)
The presentations were followed by insightful discussions between the experts.
We introduced Mark Salton and his family in our Who’s who section.
The most entertaining way to get information on this topic is to grab a cup of coffee or tea and watch this film: The History of the Schlessinger and Hamburger Coin Dealer Families.
