Prof. Dr. Oğuz Tekin – the Foremost Numismatic Scholar in Turkey

Prof. Dr. Oğuz Tekin is the first scholar from Turkey receiving this prestigious award. He is the foremost numismatic scholar in Turkey, as well as one of the prominent numismatic scholars of ancient Greek and Roman coinage and ancient metrology in the world. For over a quarter century, Tekin taught in the history section of Istanbul University, the top public university in Turkey where he taught numismatics and supervised the dissertations of many of Turkey’s current generation of numismatists. In 2010, he accepted a position at Koç University, Turkey’s premier private university, to direct the university’s AKMED center in Antalya, which serves as a research center, a venue for exhibitions and conferences, and an educational center for specialized courses. Since talking the helm at AKEMD, Tekin has organized two large international numismatic congresses held in Antalya and has initiated a summer school in numismatics at AKMED, the only course of its kind in Turkey.

“We are thrilled to offer this prestigious award to Prof. Tekin,” said ANS Executive Director Dr. Ute Wartenberg. “He is a leading figure in numismatic studies not just within Turkey, but within the field generally.”

Huntington, ANS President from 1905 to 1910, in recognition of outstanding career contributions to numismatic scholarship. The medal was designed in 1908 by Emil Fuchs to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the American Numismatic Society.
