October 14th, 2010 – The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York engaged Stefan Heidemann as curator of their department of Islamic art. He looks forward to rearrange there the permanent exhibition of Islamic Art.
Insiders have known Prof. Dr. Stefan Heidemann for many years. He is considered an eminent authority in the history of the Middle East. Until now, his sphere of activity was the university of Jena. There he was involved in teaching and he promoted the nearly forgotten collection of oriental coins, which was initiated by Johann Gustav Stickel in 1840.
For years he has been known in the anglophone world. At present he serves as visiting professor at the Bard Graduate Center / New York. He has been awarded fellowships at the Fitzwilliam Museum / Cambridge, at the Massachusetts Institute, at the Centre for Byzantine Studies, Dumbarton Oaks and many more. The Royal Numismatic Society honored Heidemann with the Samir Shamma Prize.
New York acquires a competent, enthusiastic and eloquent scholar. CoinsWeekly congratulates both: the Metropolitan Museum and Stefan Heidemann.
