Spanish Painters series featuring Joan Miró

January 3, 2013 – On November 5 the Spanish Royal Mint has released the fifth set in the collector coin series entitled ‘Spanish Painters’, on this occasion featuring Joan Miró (1893-1983). The five coins that make up the set, one gold and four silver, are minted in proof quality and they highlight some of the artist’s most representative paintings.
The first set in this series was dedicated to Velázquez, the second to Salvador Dalí, the third to Goya and the fourth to Domenicos Theotocopoulos (El Greco), Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, José de Ribera (El Españoleto) and Francisco de Zurbarán.

The 400-euro coin. 8 escudos
The obverse portrays a rendering of the work entitled ‘Self-portrait’ (Catalogue Raisonné ‘MIRÓ PAINTINGS’ nº 1.080), painted between 1937 and 1960, from the María Dolors Miró collection, on loan to the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona.
The reverse depicts the work entitled ‘Portrait of a Young Girl’ (C.R. nº 70), painted in 1919, and held by the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona.

The 50-euro coin. Cincuentín
The obverse shows an image from the work entitled ‘Painting’ (C.R. nº 460), executed in 1934. It is held in the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona.
The reverse presents a rendering of the work ‘The House of the Palm Tree’ (C.R. nº 64), painted in 1918, currently in the holdings of the Reina Sofía Nacional Art Museum in Madrid.

The 10-euro coins. 8 reales
The obverse, common to the three coins, captures the work ‘Autoretrat’ (‘Autoportrait’) (C.R. nº 72), painted in 1919, and held by the Picasso Museum in Paris.
The reverse of the first coin reproduces an image from the work ‘Woman, bird, star’ (C.R. nº 1.901), executed in 1978, held in the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona.

The reverse of the second coin reproduces an image from the work ‘Characters and birds with a dog’ (C.R. nº 1.887), painted in 1978, held in the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona.
