August 23, 2012 – Lately we told you about prince Cem and his unfortunate life. Actually, for a short time he issued coins too. However, only few of them are preserved. What a luck that Lutz Ilisch from the Centre for Islamic Numismatics at Tübingen University has turned out to be such a diligent reader of CoinsWeekly. He informed us of a rare issue:
Aqche of Cem Sultan from his ruling period in Bursa. Source: University Collection Tübingen. No FINT DE6D2.
“You might have mentioned in CoinsWeekly that Cem Sultan coined the so-called aqche during his short period of rule in Bursa. But after so much sorrow in life some numismatic sorrow doesn’t matter, anyway.
And we should not forget the American collector Bill Holberton, aka Jem Sultan, whose two-volume collection catalogue you will find in any important numismatic library. It was probably the joy of owning two objects so much desired, two aqche of Cem Sultan, that induced him to choose as pseudonym the name of this tragic figure.”
