April 28, 2016 – The 2016 Singapore International Coin Fair (SICF) proved to be an unqualified success. The 3-day coin event (April 1-3) attracted thousands of visitors, and featured more than 100 different dealers and mints displaying their coins and banknotes. SICF 2016 was organized by Panda America for the 6th straight year, and took place at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Center in downtown Singapore. The Numismatic community of Mints, Dealers, collectors, traders, manufacturers and associations were represented from over 20 different countries, all joining hands in Singapore to promote public awareness and interest in the field of numismatics.
The 2016 SICF was pleased to be the location for The Singapore Mint’s official launch of 2 great new coin series: the Bhutan Lunar Monkey Coins and the Native Birds of Singapore Coin Set. The Singapore Mint also hosted a variety of exclusive activities to enhance visitor’s knowledge and experience, which included autograph sessions by coins designers and an educational open forum called “Coin Collecting 101” that was hosted by their Mint Director, Mr. Yip. Also launched at the show and proving extremely popular was the Niue 2016 Hachiko $1 silver proof coin, featuring Japan’s most famous and beloved Akita dog, internationally known for his loyalty and dedication.
This year’s SICF featured for the first time on site banknote grading by PCGS Currency from USA and by CMC Grading Institution Ltd. in Taiwan. Grading was offered to collectors at a special SICF offer price, with a large team of graders that accepted submissions up to the last minute before the show ended. Both grading companies reported a great response, with a popular submission being the new S$50 banknote that was issued in Singapore this year.
The SICF again welcomed mints from around the world, with displays and new coins on show from the Austrian Mint, the Brunei Mint, the China Mint, the Holy Land Mint in Israel, the Royal Thai Mint, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea Mint, Monnaie de Paris, and the Singapore Mint.
Dealers and mints were unanimous in their praise of the show, reporting strong business with many being happy in particular with the tremendous buying opportunities from collectors and other dealers who had travelled from around the world roaming the fair actively trading an excellent variety of coins and banknotes.
Visitors to the 2016 SICF found not only numerous buying & selling opportunities, but also had the opportunity to meet and greet with some of the biggest players in the industry. In particular, the SICF organizing committee was honored to once again have renowned American investor Jim Rogers attend the show. Based in Singapore, Mr. Rogers is a regular SICF attendee, & could be seen roaming the bourse floor admiring the displays of gold and silver, and also making some purchases.
With the strong support of the numismatic field, the SICF has grown into one of the premier numismatic events in the world. Dealers and mints interested in confirming their attendance at SICF 2017 scheduled for March 24-26, 2017 are invited to contact Sim at Panda America, by emailing or by visiting the official fair website.
