San Marino presents collector coins 2017 in gold

December 7, 2017 – The Ufficio Filatelico e Numismatico of San Marino informs about the release of gold commemorative coins for 2017. They are dedicated to St. Mary’s Church of the Order of Servants of Mary in Valdragone and the 25th anniversary of the entry of San Marino into the United Nations.

San Marino / 2 Scudi / Gold .900 / 6.451g / 21mm / Design: Antonella Napolione (obverse) and Claudia Momoni (reverse) / Mintage: 600.

The reverse of the 2 scudi proof gold coin “Architecture in San Marino: St. Mary’s Church of the Order of Servants of Mary in Valdragone” shows the Romanesque façade of the Church of Saint Mary of the Servants of Mary in Valdragone. The cloister shows a series of wide arches. The magnificent Annunciation polyptych that is located inside, attributed to Bartolomeo Coda, dates back to the first half of the sixteenth century. In the apse there is a precious crucifix dating back to the 15th century.

Thanks to the century-old history of freedom, neutrality and respect for human rights, the Republic of San Marino, after five years as observer, on the 2nd March 1992 became a full member of the United Nations. This was established through Security Council Resolution no.774, approved by acclamation on the 24th February of the same year. After this date, San Marino also joined other UN agencies.

The reverses of the 20 and 50 euro coins of the gold diptych “25th Anniversary of the Entry of San Marino in UNO” represent respectively a dove, symbol of peace, with an olive branch, and the three Towers surrounded by a crown of olive branches, inspired by the UN logo.
