Gillio began his career in numismatics in 1959. He joined the ANA five years later, and attended his first ANA convention in Cleveland in 1964. Since then, he has never missed one of these events. “I’ve attended every ANA show since becoming a member and this August will be my 50th show – that’s 50 years in a row – which I feel is an extraordinary accomplishment,” said Gillio. “And I can truly say that I have enjoyed each and every one.”
Since becoming a member, Ron Gillio has been involved with the ANA in many capacitates. Through the 1980s, Gillio held grading and authentication seminars for the ANA and received many awards from ANA presidents over the years. In 1993 and 1995, he was appointed to consumer protection committees.
As president of the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG), he was part of a team that joined with the ANA to work on grading and encapsulating for American Numismatic Association Certification Service (ANACS). While at the PNG, Gillio served on the board of directors for 17 years and held various executive titles, including president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary. In addition, he served on the consumer protection board and other committees. He is also recognized as the co-author of California Pioneer Fractional Gold – the most authoritative reference work on California pioneer fractional gold coins. For many years he has been a contributor to “A Guide Book of United States Coins: The Official Red Book”.
