August 30, 2018 – Perth Mint has issued a silver proof coin which features three of the key ships that appeared in the original Star Trek television series: the starship U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, a Klingon D7 Battle Cruiser and Romulan Bird-of-Prey. Struck by The Perth Mint from 2oz of 99.99% pure silver in proof quality, each coin is issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu.

Tuvalu / 2 dollars / silver .999 / 62.21 g / 55.6 mm / Design: Jennifer McKenna / Mintage: 850.

Created by Gene Roddenberry, Star Trek debuted in 1966 and ran for three seasons until 1969. The classic science fiction television series followed the 23rd century adventures of Captain James T. Kirk and the Constitution-class starship U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, a powerful interstellar spacecraft dispatched by the Earth-based Starfleet Command to explore the galaxy.

Central to the coin’s reverse design is a struck representation of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 as it appeared in The Original Series. Depicted above this is a Klingon D7 Battle Cruiser and below it is a Romulan Bird-of-Prey. The three ships, which are essential elements in the narrative of the television series, are portrayed against a coloured intergalactic background.

The Klingon D7 Battle Cruiser was deployed during the 2256 Federation-Klingon War then served as the backbone of the Klingon Imperial fleet for several years during the 2260s. This ship was predatory in appearance with a long neck, head-like command pod and a spread-wing primary hull. Starfleet first encountered the Romulan Bird-of-Prey in 2266 when one crossed the Romulan Neutral Zone and destroyed several border outposts. (TOS: “Balance of Terror”)

The coin is housed in a replica of a Star Trek: The Original Series communicator, within a Star Trek themed shipper.
