Online Conference: “Coins from Roman Military Sites”

[bsa_pro_ad_space id=4]

On Friday 18th December 2020 the Institute for Classical Archeology of the University of Tübingen will hold a conference together with the State Office for Historic Preservation in Stuttgart and the Department for Roman Provincial Archeology of the University of Freiburg.

The conference is named: “Coins from Roman military sites. Theory, methodology and practice in analyzing coin finds”.

Since the activities of the Reichslimeskommission in the late 19th century, Roman coins from the military sites along the Neckar and the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes have been among the most important material sources in order to date and discuss the respective sites. In the wake of New Archaeology, the method of statistical analysis of coin finds has been successfully applied since the 1990s, which led, among other important developments, to a fundamental re-dating of the Roman military installations at the Neckar Limes. In recent years, new approaches have increasingly found their way into archaeological and numismatic research, which evaluate the coins in their archaeological contexts and aim to gain insight into the individual meaning and function of a coin at a site.

Recent studies of coin finds from military sites along the Neckar Limes demonstrate the great potential for the study of a military site if these new approaches are utilized. The aim of the conference is therefore to bring together current approaches in studying coin finds from an archaeological perspective (theory, methodology and practice) and to discuss new perspectives for the archaeological research of Roman military sites.

The conference will be transferred via Zoom.
