October 28, 2010 – Collectors of Numismatica in Nummis will be delighted to hear that another medal in honor of a numismatist has been issued. This medal was made in honor of Joe Cribb curator of the British Museum’s coin cabinet on the occasion of his retirement.
The specialist in coins from the Middle and Far East was born in Brighton on October 30th, 1947. Since 1970 he has worked as curator of the British Museum’s coin cabinet. In his capacity he has organized numerous exhibitions and supervised the installation of the HSBC Money Gallery of the BM. Since 2003 he has kept the title “Keeper of Coins and Medals”, in 2010 he was nominated “Research Keeper”.
From 2004 to 2009 Joe Cribb acted as president of the prestigious Royal Numismatic Society; this is just one out of his various tasks in the academic world. And it is simply impossible to list all his publications.
Joe Cribb was awarded numerous prizes. In 2010 he received the Nelson Wright Medal of the Numismatic Society of India, in 2008 the Archer M. Huntington Medal of the ANS, in 1999 the Annual Medal of the Royal Numismatic Society / London and in 1997 the Hirayama Award of the Institute of Silk Road Studies.
