News from the Perth Mint in May

May 5, 2011 – A comprehensive list of new commemorative coins struck by the Perth Mint in May reached us recently.

Australia – 0.50 AUD – 1/2oz 999 silver – 15.591 g – 36.6 mm – Mintage: 10.000 – Designer: Elise Martinson.

This final release in the Bush Babies Series features one of Australia’s most iconic animal, the koala. This furry friend is one of the few animals that actually has fingerprints similar to humans.

Australia – 1 AUD – Aluminium/Bronze – 13.8 g – 30.6 mm – Mintage: Unlimited – Designer: Wade Robinson.

The Perth Mint and Australia Post mark the 100th anniversary of the Royal Australian Navy with a stunning commemorative Stamp and Coin Cover.

Australia – 25 AUD – 916 gold – 7.99 g – 22.6 mm – Mintage: 2.500.

The sovereign is one of the most famous gold coins ever made with over 106 million coins made in Perth alone in the 19th and early 20th century. On the reverse of this year’s Perth Mint Gold Proof Sovereign appears the Australian Commonwealth Coat of Arms.

Dame Nellie Melba (1861 – 1931) was an opera soprano who became one of the most famous divas of her age. She was Australia’s first international singing star and was among the first international artists to perform in radio broadcasts.

Celebrating twenty years of phenomenal success, The Wiggles formed as an entertainment group in Sydney, Australia in 1991. The Perth Mint marks the 20th anniversary of The Wiggles releasing four individual $1 coins and a four-coin set.

Also proving popular plunder is the Young Collector’s pirate-themed $1 coins. The fourth coin features Bartholomew Roberts who became the most notorious pirate of his era under the name of Black Bart. Born in Wales in 1682, Roberts went to sea at the age of 13 and later converted to piracy, reportedly capturing over 400 ships!
