May 22, 2014 – In 2014, Italy issues two new Euro gold coins: The 50 Euro gold coin “Fauna in the Arts: Baroque” and the 20 Euro gold coin “Flora in the Arts: Baroque” which continue the series “Flora in the Arts” and “Fauna in the Arts” from previous years.
Fauna Nell’Arte 2014 – Barocco
Italy/ 50 Euros/ Gold/ 16.13 g/ 28 mm/ Mintage: 1,500.
The obverse shows the Piazza della Minerva in Rome. In the foreground, an elephant carrying an ancient obelisk. All around, from left to right, the inscription reads “REPUBBLICA ITALIANA”. Below, on the right, the name of the designer “V. DE SETA” is engraved.
The reverse depicts the elephant of the Piazza della Minerva in Rome. It was sculpted as a base for the ancient obelisk which was uncovered under the convent annexed to the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva. All around, from left to right, the inscription reads “FAUNA NELL’ARTE”. In the field, the letter “R” and the year of issue “2014” are engraved, below, the value “50 EURO”.
Flora Nell’Arte 2014 – Barocco
Italy/ 20 Euros/ Gold/ 6.45 g/ 21 mm/ Mintage: 1,500.
The obverse shows a detail of the facade of the Galleria Borghese in Rome. Above, a detail of the Fontana dei Mascheroni e dei Tritoni in the Villa Borghese. In the field, on a line and on the bottom round, the related inscriptions “REPUBBLICA” and “ITALIANA” are engraved.
On the reverse, Daphne transforms in a laurel tree, a detail of the group “Apollo e Dafne” by Gian Lorenzo Bernini conserved at the Galleria Borghese in Rome. The inscriptions read “FLORA NELL’ARTE” around the coin’s edge, in the right field the value “20 EURO”, in the left one, the year of issue “2014” and on the bottom, the signature of the artist “A. MASINI”.
