April 25, 2013 – The succession of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands will take place on 30 April. The investiture of King Willem-Alexander will take place on this day of celebration. In order to commemorate this Royal event, the Dutch Ministry of Finance has issued new Dutch 10, 20 and 50 euro commemorative coins: ‘The Royal Dutch Coin’. These denominations are only used on Dutch commemorative coins with Royal themes.

The Royal Dutch Coin

Uniting, representative and encouraging. Three elements that will be important for Willem-Alexander throughout his reign as King. The designers, Persijn Broersen & Margrit Lukács, have chosen to reflect this in the design of the King’s ten Euro.

The elements are also expressed via the all-encompassing canopy and banner that are visible on both sides. ‘Je Maintiendrai’ (I will uphold) is an expression that remains relevant today and can be interpreted in many different ways: in terms of the royal family as a uniting institution which will remain and continue, but also as a motto in the fight against, with and for water, in which King Willem-Alexander has played an important role for many years.

On the front, we can see King Willem-Alexander observing his audience, depicted on the back, from behind a canopy.
