Naville Numismatics presents its Live Auction 70. The auction will close on Sunday 12th December 2021, 16.00 UK time, at which time the live session will begin.

Absentee bidders can bid electronically through Naville Numismatics website from the day the sale is published online up to the start of the live session.

The auction features a selection of 652 lots of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Medieval and Modern coins, all chosen with contribution from NAC’s experts.

The sale includes a selection of coins, including bronzes and fractions, from Magna Graecia, Sicily and Greece, some of them from the E.E. Clain-Stefanelli collection sold in association with Stack’s Bowers Galleries.

Lot 8: Calabria. Tarentum. Nomos, circa 500-480. Rare. Lightly toned and About extremely fine. Starting Bid: £800.

This first section of the sale starts with a rare 5 asses of Populonia, a sextans of Populonia, a rare quadrunx of Larinum (ex Asta del Titano 2005), an interesting nomos of Poseidonia, a well preserved nomos of Caulonia and an attractive series of beautiful coins of Tarentum, Metapontum, Syracuse and Athens, even beyond a series of coins from the BCD duplicates, a selection of Hellenistic coins and a series of coins of Judaea and Nabathea.

Noteworthy in this section are a rare and well preserved nomos of Tarentum, a very rare stater of Ephesus and a well preserved diobol or 80 drachmae of Cleopatra.

Lot 380: Q. Caecilius Metellus Pius Scipio. Denarius, 47-46, Africa. Lovely old cabinet tone, light graffito on obv., otherwise Extremely Fine. From a European collection. Ex Nascia 1971. Starting Bid: £150.

The Roman selection boasts an interesting series of Roman Republican bronzes and a striking array of denarii.

This includes a well struck quadrigatus, a rare quinarius of Q. series, a well struck of Cn. Cornelius Lentulus, a well preserved denarius of M. Aemilius Lepidus (Ex Ratto 1970), a beautiful denarius of Q. Caecilius Metellus Pius Scipio (Ex Nascia 1971), a beautiful denarius of M. Porcius Cato (Ex Crippa 1971), a scarce denarius of M. Aemilius Lepidus and C. Caesar Octavianus and an interesting tetradrachm of M. Antonius and Octavia.

Lot 437: Hadrian, 117-138. Sestertius, circa 119, Rome. Green patina and About Extremely fine. Starting Bid: £400.

The Imperial selection of the sale features an attractive series of Augustus and also an attractive selection of Roman bronzes and silver coins such as a rare denarius of Vespasian from a Spanish mint (Ex Harlan J. Berk 2018), a beautiful sestertius of Hadrian, a good series of denarii of Antonines and also of Several dinasty, two beautiful follis of Diocletian from the Dattari collection, an interesting solidus of Valentinian I and another solidus of Valens, even beyond an interesting selection of Solidi, Denari, Antoniniani, Sesterti, Dupondi, Asses and Folles.

Very remarkable in this part are a beautiful sestertius of Vespasian, a very rare aureus of Titus caesar, a well preserved aureus of Domitian caesar and a beautiful sestertius of Trajan (Ex NAC 23, 2002, 1544).

Lot 646: Savoia. Carlo Felice, 1821-1831. 20 Lire 1831. Rare. Very fine. Starting Bid: £250.

The Medieval and Modern section includes a selection of interesting coins such as a 20 lire 1831 of Carlo Felice (Ex NAC 60, 2011, 342).

The Roman Provincial part of the sale includes a selection from the Dattari Collection.
