November 13, 2012 – Krause Publications, a leading producer of coin and paper money books, magazines, events and online products, has announced the nominees for the 2013 Coin of the Year awards.

Each year, the awards honor the best in coin design from around the world. The awards will be presented during a ceremony taking place at the World Money Fair in Berlin, Germany, during first weekend of February 2013.

The coins nominated for this year’s awards were released in 2011, and represent the highest achievement in theme, design and marketing from mints and central banks from around the world.
A panel of judges including authors, editors, and numismatists, as well as members of the American Numismatic Association and Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, met October 12 to choose the following nominees from hundreds received from around the world.

These nominees will now go on to be judged by a worldwide panel of mint and museum officials, journalists and individual experts, to decide a winner in each individual category, and in the end, the final Coin of the Year.

Jonah in the Whale COTY Coin of the Year 2012.

Last year’s COTY winner was a 2-New Sheqalim coin issued by the Bank of Israel entitled “Jonah in the Whale” from the Mint’s popular Biblical Art series. The coin’s obverse features the face value in Hebrew and English, the Israel state emblem, “Israel” in Hebrew, English and Arabic, the mint year, the inscription “Jonah in the belly of the fish,” Jonah 2:1 in three languages and the prophet Jonah in prayer. The reverse depicts Jonah praying from the belly of the whale: “Thy billows and thy waves passed over me … yet I will look again towards thy Holy Temple …”
