October 1, 2015 – Israeli scholar and professional numismatist Shraga Qedar (1933-2015) died on September 23 in Israel, surrounded by his children.

Shraga Qedar (r) loved numismatic cooperation. Here we see him with one of his friends, the well-known David Hendin (l).

Qedar, together with the late Ya’akov Meshorer, co-authored the widely referenced volumes ‘Coins of Samaria in the Fourth Century BCE’ and ‘Samarian Coinage.’ Qedar discovered and published the first coins of the city of Marisa (Maresha) in ancient Judea. He also pioneered research in Arab-Byzantine coins and ancient scale weights, among other topics.

A complete obituary and tribute by David Hendin will appear in CoinsWeekly in two weeks on October 15, 2015.
