November 13, 2012 – The Excellence in Currency Awards are presented by the International Association of Currency Affairs (IACA) to recognise excellence in currency issue, production, processing, management and distribution. There are nine categories, and they are open to any note/coin issuer or organisation supplying products, services or systems for currency production or management. Nominations are now being invited for the 5th Excellence in Currency Awards.

The awards have traditionally been presented at the Currency Conference, the pre-eminent event for banknotes. However, in a break with tradition, the category of Best New Coin or Coin Series will be presented during its counterpart for circulating coins, the Coin Conference, which takes place 12-13 March, 2013 in Berlin, Germany.

The category covers circulating coins only (i.e. the award does not include commemorative coins that are sold for higher than face value). Assessment criteria include: historical content, continuity of series, innovation, uniqueness, security and overall design. The coin or series must have been issued in the 18-month period from July 2011 to December 2012.

Nominations received will be initially accessed against set criteria by the IACA awards committee which includes three former central bankers. The nominations in each category will be reduced to a short list of 3 for the vote of IACA members.

The closing date for nominations is December 15, 2012. Nominations can be made online via the IACA website.
