March 15, 2012 – It came completely unexpected when a worker attacked the rafter of a building and gold poured down on him. The building is part of the Champagne-producing company Alexandre Bonnet in Les Riceys and was to be renovated.
The rain consisted of 497 double eagles – gold coins with the face value of $20 struck between 1851 and 1928 in the United States. And nobody knows how they came into the rafter. But in the 1930s the location was property of a French wine producer who dealt with America. Maybe in these times the coins were buried in the ceiling and subsequently sank into oblivion. Mr Lange stated that he thinks about producing a special vintage in commemoration of the discovery. However, the workers not only enjoyed this special shower. Mr Lange also decided to split up the treasure with them, thus half of the approximately $970,000 will go to them, the other half he will take for himself. At least if nobody else will claim these coins.
