April 30, 2015 – As the German Ministry of Finance stated, Germany will issue its series of circulating commemorative coins in silver with a nominal value of 20 euros. This applies for both qualities, proof and brilliant uncirculated. Coins of the latter quality can be bought at German banks for face value.
This has come as a surprise, as not so many years ago, in 2011, the same Ministry decided – in spite of warnings from dealers’ and collectors’ associations – to change the material of the commemorative coins which are sold for face value from silver to cupro-nickel instead of rising the face value. Now, falling demand has taught the persons responsible better. They have been forced to do what should have been done years ago.

From January 2016 collector coins will be regularly made of .925 silver in brilliant uncirculated and proof quality as well. The first coin will be ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ in the Grimms’ Tales series.
Of course, this decision has been received very favourably among collectors. Various representatives of German coin magazines and dealers’ associations declared that they believe this to be a way to promote coin collecting.
