On January 30, 2014 Dr Wolfgang Steguweit celebrated his 70th birthday. Following his positions at the coin cabinets in Gotha and Berlin he is enjoying an extremely prolific and restless retirement.
USA releases new import restrictions on coins from Bulgaria
On January 16, 2014, U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced new import restrictions on coins from Bulgaria. This is another major expansion of import restrictions, and one that for the first time reaches coins made as recently as the 18th century.
Industrialization displayed on banknotes
From muscle power to steam engines, the new banknote exhibition held by Giesecke & Devrient, the Munich-based banknote specialist, traces the history of industrialization. The firm’s in-house museum is displaying one hundred banknotes – both historical and current – from 61 countries.
Burglary near Bamberg
The police is asking for help while investigating a burglary in the Bamberg area in Bavaria. A large portion of a coin collection was stolen last November. Most of the stolen coins were issued by the prince-bishops of Bamberg.
Japan Mint commemorates Cambodian friendship and Heisei Era
The Japan Mint has issued a silver coin to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Cambodia. The Mint has also newly released a „Heisei” Era coin set which includes a fascinating red-brass medal.
Australian Mint presents holographic silver coin
Australians celebrated the New Year and the Royal Australian Mint revealed the design on its stunning new 2014 $1 Sydney New Year’s Eve holographic silver proof coin. It features the “all-seeing eye” which was central to the midnight fireworks display on Sydney Harbour.
Colloquium on mediaeval coinage of Spain and Maghreb
The French School in Madrid, Casa de Velázquez, will host a colloquium on the coinage in al-Andalus and the Maghreb in the Middle Ages on February 12-13, 2014.
Pawel Leski wins ANS’s J. Sanford Saltus Award
The American Numismatic Society has selected Pawel Leski to receive the Society’s 2014 J. Sanford Saltus Award for distinguished achievement in the art of the medal. Established in 1913, the award remains one of the most prestigious awards in the field of medallic art.
New 10 euro banknote unveiled
On 13 January 2014, the new 10 euro banknote was unveiled at a press conference at the European Central Bank in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The note has a refreshed design and some enhanced security features. Circulation in the euro area starts on 23 September 2014.
