January 6, 2011 – Chinese numismatists have got a little problem: They will have to describe more than three tons of coins in order to publish properly the latest hoard found in China. This incredible mass of coins was found in the Shaanxi province, when the foundation of a new building was excavated. They were located in a kiln and date from the Song dynastie (960-1279).
More than 20 types of cast cash coins were hidden in the kiln of 2 m width and 3 m depth. They were threaded on strings due to their low value and their easy handling. The structures of the strings are still to be seen.
