Ex Oriente … Salus! Greeting card from China

December 17, 2015 – Ex Oriente … Salus! (‘Greetings from the Orient!’) – this is not only the motto of this year’s greeting card of the Institute for the History of Ancient Civilizations (IHAC) for the New Year 2016, but also the entrance ticket into the world of ancient numismatics.

By purchasing 17 pieces of Greek and Roman coins from Dr. Florian Haymann (Germany) in November 2015, the IHAC has provided a basis for the first systematic research activities with the western ancient numismatics in China. A key aspect of the collection and the teaching as well as research will be the various exchange and network processes between the ancient poleis, states and empires which is reflected in the coin production.
In the summer term 2016, we are proud to offer the first course in ancient Roman numismatics to our MA- and PhD-students. They will describe, identify, and contextualise our new acquired pieces, and hopefully open the horizon to the world of numismatics in China. Thereby, the IHAC – which is the basis and backbone of Ancient Studies in China with chairs in Classics, Egyptology and Assyriology since its founding 1984 – wants to place a stimulus for the dealing with ancient original sources as well as the integration of this research branch into the ancient studies in China which up to now focus merely on literary and epigraphic research!

Due to the fact that we currently have only few standard research literature in our library – e.g. the BMC-catalogues, RRC, RIC, RPC have not been purchased yet –, we would be very glad about kind donations of literature (books, journals, catalogues) relevant to every field of Ancient Numismatics.
