April 6, 2017 – The annual meeting/regional conference on Islamic numismatics shall take place in the large seminar room of the department of Oriental and Islamic studies of the AOI, Tübingen University, Wilhelmstr. 113, D-72074 Tübingen in the afternoon and morning 6/7 May 2017.
Participation will be forseeable international with participants from Morocco, Egypt and Syria, while hopefully also the Turkish friends can find the way to Tübingen in spite all economic, diplomatic and other pressions. Please write to organizer Dr. Lutz Ilisch if a formal invitation is required.
A good half of the programme of papers has been submitted so far, which means that three or four other papers would be welcome. Apart from the traditional presentation of new publications in this year the volume III: Egypt of the Sylloge Numorum Arabicorum Tübingen, authored by Mohammad Younis shall be released on our venue. With about 120 folio sized pages including probably 53 colour plates showing nearly 1200 coins this is again one of the more voluminous issues of the series. It is the ninth part to appear in print with two more (Damascus II by Aram Vardanyan and Lutz Ilisch and Halab II by Alaa Aldin alChomari) in the pipeline at present. Like collection of Egyptian coins nearly doubled after 1990. And while Stephen Album had already brought together what seems to be the World’s most comprehensive collection of Egyptian silver coins it was mainly through the indefatigable efforts of Marie Luise Zarnitz and Claus Pelling that also the series of gold coins was developed to be representative for this characteristic metal within the monetary history of the country. The final fixed price for the book will be 78 euro and any participant who wishes to subscribe can obtain it with a 30 % discount at the presentation on 6 May.
