Naville Numismatics present their Live Auction 74. The sale will close on Sunday 19th June 2022, 16.00 UK time, at which time the live session will begin. The auction features a selection of 677 lots of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Medieval and Modern coins, all chosen with contribution from NAC’s experts.

Lot 40: Greek. Sicily, Syracuse Tetradrachm, in the style of Eukleidas circa 405, Rare. Lovely old cabinet tone and Good Very fine. Starting price: £800.

This first section of the sale starts with a rare 20 Asses of Populonia, a rare bronze of Hyrium, a rare nomos of Tarentum (Ex Ratto 1929 and Glendining 1955 sales. From the Còte and Lockett collections), a well preserved dinomos of Thurium, a rare tetras of Kersini, a rare tetras of Lipara, an attractive series of Abydos and Ilium, even beyond a selection of Hellenistic coins and a series of coins of Macedonia, Athens, Seleucid kings, Phoenicia, Judaea and Egypt. Noteworthy in this section are a beautiful tetradrachm of Syracuse, an apparently unique Dinar of Huvishka (Ex Ars et Nummus 1963) and well preserved 80 drachmae of Cleopatra VII.

Lot 373: – Roman Republic. L. Valerius Acisculus. Denarius, circa 45, Rome mint. Lovely iridescent tone, almost insignificant banker’s mark on obv., otherwise Good Extremely Fine. Starting price: £250.

The Roman selection boasts an interesting series of Roman Republican bronzes and a striking array of denarii. This includes a well preserved quadrigatus an apparently unpublished denarius of series star no star, a well preserved denarius of A. Postumius Albinus Sp.f., arare denarius of L. Iulius Bursio (sold with collector’s ticket dated 1889), a rare denarius of C. Vibius C.f.n. Pansa Caetronianus, a beautiful denarius of L. Valerius Acisculus and two rare cistophoric tetradrachm of M. Antonius with Octavia.

Lot 446: Roman Imperial. Antoninus Pius (138-161). Aureus, circa 139, Rome mint. Several edge marks, possibly traces of mounting, otherwise Good Very Fine. From the Huntington collection (HSA 22193). Starting price: £1,800.

The Imperial selection of the sale features an attractive series of Augustus and also an attractive selection of Roman bronzes and silver coins such as an aureus of Augustus with Caius and Lucius on reverse, a rare dupondius of Tiberius, a plated denarius in name of Nero Claudius Drusus with the Este eagle, a rare cistophoric tetradrachm of Galba, a beautiful sestertius of Trajan (Ex Glendining 1960), a beautiful denarius of Julia Domna (Ex Leu 1991), a rare sestertius of Maximus caesar (Ex Galerie des Monnaies & Spink 1977), a beautiful sestertius of Herennia Etruscilla (Ex Hess 1932; Glendining 1946 sales. From the Webb and Lockett collections), an interesting selection of follis from the Rauceby Hoard (Found in Lincolnshire, July 2017. Submitted for consideration as Treasure and returned to the finders. PAS ID: LIN-F6D516. BM Ref: 2017 T649), even beyond an interesting selection of Solidi, Denari, Antoniniani, Sesterti, Dupondi, Asses and Folles. Very remarkable in this part are an aureus of Antoninus Pius (Ex Huntington collection), a beautiful aureus of Antoninus Pius and a rare siliqua of Constantine III.

Lot 315: Egypt, Alexandria. Julia Maesa, sister of Julia Domna and grandmother of Elagabalus Tetradrachm, circa 221-222. Rare. Nicely toned, Good Very Fine. From the Dattari collection. Starting price: £300.
