Naville Numismatics presents its Live Auction 71. The auction will close on Sunday 13th February 2022, 16.00 GMT, at which time the live session will begin. Absentee bidders can bid electronically through Naville Numismatics website from the day the sale is published online up to the start of the live session. The auction features a selection of 643 lots of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Medieval and Modern coins, all chosen with contribution from NAC’s experts.

Lot 9: Greek. Bruttium, Caulonia. Nomos, circa 450 BC. Old cabinet tone and About Extremely fine. Starting Price: £350.

The sale includes a selection of coins, including bronzes and fractions, from Magna Graecia, Sicily and Greece, some of them from the E.E. Clain-Stefanelli collection sold in association with Stacks Bowers Galleries. This first section of the sale starts with a rare obol of Alba Fuciens, an interesting nomos of Poseidonia, a beautiful nomos of Croton and an attractive series of beautiful coins of Tarentum, Metapontum, Syracuse and Athens, even beyond a series of coins from the BCD duplicates, a selection of Hellenistic coins and a series of coins of Phoenicia, Judaea and Nabataea.

Noteworthy in this section are a rare and well preserved hecte of Mytilene, a rare stater of Aradus and an interesting diobol or 80 drachmae of Cleopatra.

Lot 360: Roman Republic. C. Iulius Caesar. Denarius, early to mid 48 BC. Lovely old cabinet tone, an almost insignificant graffito on obv., otherwise Good Extremely Fine. Starting Price: £180.

The Roman selection boasts an interesting series of Roman Republican bronzes and a striking array of denarii, some of them from an European collection and others with important provenances such as purchased from Ratto and De Nicola.

This includes an interesting brockage denarius of M. Sergius Silus, a rare brockage denarius of C. Claudius Pulcher, a well struck denarius of L. Memmius Galeria, a beautiful denarius of Q. Titius (From a European collection and privately purchased in 1972), a well preserved quinarius of Q. Titius, a beautiful denarius of P. Satrienus, a scarce denarius of L. Lucretius Trio (Ex Künker 89, 2004, 1912 and NAC Spring 2020, 594 sales), a scarce denarius of C. Iulius Caesar and a cistophoric tetradrachm of M. Antonius and Octavia.

Lot 444: Roman Imperial. Lucius Verus (161-169). Sestertius, circa 161, Rome mint. Very fine. Starting Price: £200.

The Imperial selection of the sale features an attractive series of Augustus and also an attractive selection of Roman bronzes and silver coins such as a rare sestertius of Julia Titi, a well preserved tetradrachm of Trajan, a beautiful sestertius of Lucius Verus, a very rare antoninianus of Caracalla, a rare sestertius of Geta, a beautiful follis of Diocletian from the Dattari collection and a solidus of Valentinian II, even beyond an interesting selection of Solidi, Denari, Antoniniani, Sesterti, Dupondi, Asses and Folles. Very remarkable in this part are a beautiful aureus of Domitian (Ex NAC sale 119, 2020, 41), a beautiful and rare sestertius of Trajan from the Ploil collection and an interesting sestertius of Hadrian from the Ploil collection.

The Medieval and Modern section includes a selection of interesting coins such as a fiorin of Sigismond and a 100 Corona of Franz Joseph II.

Lot 254: Roman Provincial. Egypt, Alexandria. Hadrian (117-138). Drachm, circa 136-137 (year 21). Attractive brown-green patina, Good Very Fine/About Extremely Fine. From the Dattari collection. Starting Price: £180.
