£130,000 for a Byzantine Coin at Roma Numismatics’

In Roma Numismatics’ Auction XXI 1,145 lots went under the hammer, resulting in total sales of £4,084,480 (excluding buyers’ premiums) being achieved on behalf of their consignors. Some highlights of the sale:

Lot 1008: Zoë and Theodora. Histamenon Nomisma, April-June AD 1042, Constantinople. Near Mint State. Extremely Rare; one of the key rarities of the Byzantine series, struck on a massive planchet and one of the very finest known surviving specimens. Ex Adolph Hess – Bank Leu, 1958. Hammer price: £130,000.
  • Lot 1008: The highest selling lot of the sale was the cover coin, a spectacular masterpiece of the Byzantine period with provenance going back to 1958. This hammered for £130,000 from a starting price of £30,000.
  • Lot 283: A high grade distater of Seleukos I of the greatest rarity hammered for £75,000 from a starting price of £30,000.
Lot 212: Mysia, Kyzikos. Stater, c. 500-450 BC. Extremely Fine; of superb archaic style. Extremely Rare. Hammer price: £60,000.
  • Lot 212: An extremely rare Kyzikos stater of superb archaic style hammered for £60,000 from a starting price of £12,000.
  • Lot 156: A beautiful and high grade stater of Pantikapaion hammered for £55,000 from a starting price of £9,000.
  • Lot 715: A Fleur de coin Carinus aureus hammered for £38,000 from a starting price of £12,000.
  • Lot 1061: An extremely rare stavraton of Constantine XI, a historically significant coin struck at the very end of the Byzantine empire, hammered for £34,000 from a starting price of £10,500.
Lot 4: Northeast Gaul, the Parisii AV Quarter Stater. Circa 60-40 BC. About Extremely Fine. Very Rare; in superb condition for the type and one of the best preserved examples auctioned in the past 20 years. Hammer price: £17,000.
  • Lot 4: A superb quarter stater of the Parisii from the Apollo to Apollo collection hammered for £17,000 from a starting price of £6,000.
  • Lot 461: A very rare and high grade denarius of Julius Caesar published in FFC hammered for £14,000 from a starting price of £10,500.
Lot 1094: Great Britain, Stuart. Anne. 5 Guineas, 1706. NGC graded UNC Details, Obverse Cleaned. Hammer price: £34,000.
  • Lot 1094: A beautiful high grade 5 guinea piece of Queen Anne hammered for £34,000 from a starting price of £18,000.
  • Lot 740: An anepigraphic Fleur de coin Constantine I solidus with extensive provenance hammered for £34,000 from a starting price of £12,000.
