The Top Ten from CNG’s Triton XXIV Sale

Classical Numismatic Group hold their Triton XXIV sale on 19 and 20 January 2021 followed by the electronic session 5 (Electronic Auction 484) on 27 January. Although the pre-sale estimate was around $1 million less than for the Triton sale the year before, the total sale amount was $1.5 million higher than last year’s exceeding $14.2 million. On offer was a choice selection of famous ancient coins like a Pantikapaion stater and an EID MAR denarius. See for yourself the ten coins with the highest results:

Lot 859: India, Kushan Empire. Huvishka. Dinar, circa AD 151-190, subsidiary mint in Gandhara (Peshawar?). Early phase. EF. Well struck. the third known with only the two Triton examples in Coin Archives. Estimate: $30,000. Realized: $86,000.

Extremely rare denomination for this ruler, and unpublished in the standard references with the symbols behind the head. Apparently only the third known dinar for Ohrmazd I. Estimate: $75,000. Realized: $90,000.
