Album Sale Brings Strong Prices

Good results were seen at the May 17-18 auction by Stephen Album Rare Coins at their offices in Santa Rosa, CA. Particularly strong prices were seen in the Islamic, Chinese, and Mughal areas. The sale brought in a total of $545,125 for 1,903 lots. Some highlights from the auction are as follows:

Lot 76: ARAB-SASANIAN: al-Harith b. ‘Abd Allah, 683-684, AR drachm (2.54g), DSht (Dasht Mishan), AH65, A-13, clipped down to later standard, with unknown text in ObQ3, Fine-VF, RRR. Estimate $400-500. Realized $1,265.

Lot 493: GREAT MONGOLS: Töregene, 1241-1246, AR dirham (2.92g), NM, ND, A-1976, horseman left, turning back and firing an arrow, attractive Fine to VF, R. Estimate $250-350. Realized $1,955.

Lot813: MING: Tian Qi, 1621-1627, AE 10 cash (24.49g), H-20.232, very rare character fu above reverse, Xuanfu mint, Zhili province, VF, RR. Estimate $400-500. Realized $1,610.

Lot 845: SZECHUAN-SHENSI SOVIET: AR dollar, 1934, Y-513.2, hammer and sickle over globe with map of China, small edge nick, NGC graded VF details, ex. Gregory Cole Collection. Estimate $2,000-3,000. Realized $4,600.

Lot 1084: MUGHAL: Shah Jahan III, 1759-1760, AR rupee (11.26g), Multan, AH1173 year one (ahad), KM-475.x, Wig—, very clear name, mint & date, 2 small testmarks, VF, RRRR, ex. M.H. Mirza collection. Estimate $1,200-1,500. Realized $3,680.

Lot 1182: SIKH EMPIRE: AV rupee (0.64g), Multan, VS1905, KM-87, choice EF. Estimate $1,100-1,300. Realized $3,105.

Lot 1221: BRITISH INDIA: Victoria, Queen, 1837-1876, AV mohur, 1841 (c), KM-462.1, East India Company issue, WW incuse, EF. Estimate $2,700-2,900. Realized $6,900.

Lot 1526: NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES: Untemehmung Goerach Batoe, 1 dollar, 1890, L&W-96, square, 35 mm, copper pattern, uniface, confirmed by Lansen as only 5 or 6 specimens known, Unc, RRR. Estimate $500-600. Realized $2,645.

Lot1649: UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: AR 50 dirhams, 1980/AH1400, KM-P1, double-thick piedfort issue, mintage of only 75 specimens and exceptionally rare, NGC graded PF68 UC, RRR. Estimate $900-1,100. Realized $2,415.

Lot 1719: ENGLAND: Richard II, 1377-1399, AV noble (7.67g), London, S-1654, North-1302, king, crowned, standing, facing in ship holding sword and shield / floriate cross arms extending from central panel containing letter R, crowned leopards in angles, EF. Estimate $6500-7500. Realized $6,210.
