The SKD is museum network of international renown and unites a total of 15 museums. In 2019, the SKD registered 2.6 million visitors. Already at the beginning of the 18th century, the Coin Cabinet was already considered one of the most famous of its kind in Europe and it developed into a center for scientific research in Germany. Since the summer of 2015, the exhibition of the Coin Cabinet, with its large variety of coins from antiquity to the present and its approximate 300,000 objects of various types, are back where this museum, the oldest in Dresden, began: in the Georgen building of the Dresden Residential Palace. In addition, the coin archive of the Free State of Saxony is also kept in the Coin Cabinet, the beginnings of which go back to Duke Georg the Bearded (1500 -1539). Over the centuries, the Coin Cabinet would be expanded by the Saxon electors and kings, especially under Augustus the Strong and his son August III. In total, over 30,000 Saxon medals and coins alone have come together over this long period. The 3,300 exhibits are now presented on 350 square meters of noble blue fabric and are perfectly illuminated.

The SKD seeking to fill the position of Director of the Coin Cabinet (m/f/t)

The duration of this position is initially limited to five years, with a subsequent extension of the contract possible by mutual agreement. If the requisite personal qualifications are provided, professional classification is possible up to TV-L 15 (collective wage agreement of the federal states, level 15).

The management of the Coin Cabinet is integrated within the structure of the SKD museum network forming a strong team with its roots in diversity in unity and unity in diversity. As a result, raise the profile of the directly relevant collections, comprehensive thinking, and a passionate commitment to fulfilling our mission as a “global player” in the overall network and to achieving major strategic goals are required.

Your Tasks:

As director, you will be responsible for the conceptual arrangement/display of the collections, as well as raising the profile and positioning of the collection in a regional, national, and international context, combined with an effective exhibition program and educational program. This includes maintaining existing national and international networks with a variety of partners and institutions. You will also be actively participating in the fulfilment of the goals, tasks, and processes of the SKD, as well as working in very close cooperation with the General Directorate and the cross-sectional departments. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Responsible management of the collection in regard to safety, risk management, and sustainability
  • Development of exhibition concepts/plans with links to contemporary ideas
  • The research of our collection and responsibility for publication activities
  • Development of communication concepts while considering a contemporary approach to a modern audience.
  • Representation of the SKD in professional and public situations
  • Acquisition of third-party funding and support of the “Freundeskreis”
  • Leading a dedicated team of eight employees
  • The training and promotion of young scientists

Your Profil:

We are looking for a person with a subject-related academic education (history, archae-ology, numismatics), a strong knowledge of numismatics, and their own research profile. You must have knowledge and experience in cultural management and the management of museums, as well as being familiar with contemporary museum management and its current discourses. In order to further develop the concept of the collection in the future, you should also be open-minded and have an international network.

Specifically, you should have the following skills:

  • Completed university degree, ideally with doctorate
  • Several years of professional and leadership experience at a museum institution
  • Extensive experience with exhibitions
  • Analytical ability, strategic competence, and confidence in decision-making
  • Creative will, negotiating skills, and assertiveness
  • Representable and expressive
  • Team spirit and a strong social and diversity competence
  • Knowledge and experience in personnel and budget responsibility
  • Organizational talent, initiative, and high commitment
  • Very good speaking and writing skills in both German and English
