Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio official NYINC auction realizes $7.3 million

An extremely rare 1902 Pattern Crown in Gold, PCGS SP-62 brought $117,500 as the top lot in the Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio Official NYINC Auction, held January 8-14, 2013, at The Waldorf Astoria New York, where collectors focused heavily on world coins and paper money, including examples of early ancient rarities and Roman coinage from The Robert O. Ebert Collection.

2359: GREAT BRITAIN. Edward VII (1901-1910). Pattern Crown in Gold, 1902. PCGS SP-62. Estimate: $100,000-120,000. Realized: $117,500

“Our NYINC auction proved to be an excellent beginning to 2013,” said Richard Ponterio, executive vice president of Stack’s Bowers Galleries. “The numerous rarities included in the sale resulted in strong bidder participation in all sessions. Prices realized were solid across the spectrum of world and ancient coins and paper offerings, which speaks to the enthusiasm with which bidders greeted our first sale of the year.”

Interest surrounding The Robert O. Ebert Collection was high, as bidders and enthusiasts gathered to see and bid on the collection of ancient Roman coins, considered by many experts to be the most comprehensive assemblage of Hadrianic coinage to exist in private hands. World coins also had a strong showing and certainly demonstrated that collectors are paying attention to the ever-growing world coin market. Interest in The Demarte Collection – a selection of high quality and rare coins from Italy, Germany, Russia and other European nations – as well as Nicaraguan treasures from The Luis H. Flores also garnered special attention.

In all, the more than 4,000 lots of world and ancient coins along with paper money offerings generated over $7.3 million in total sales.
