Mowbray offers unique New Zealand medal pair

Mowbray Collectables 21st International Numismatic Auction, in Wellington New Zealand on 21 September 2018, features 575 lots.

Lot 162. NZ Albert Medal & Royal Humane Society of New Zealand gold medal. Estimate: $NZ 23,000.

Top billing goes to the only Albert Medal and Royal Humane Society of New Zealand Gold medal pair ever awarded in New Zealand, estimated at $NZ 23,000 and on the market for the first time. Charles Augustus Chapman, Australian by birth, received New Zealand’s premier bravery awards for successive rescues of 4 people from drowning in severe floods in Paparoa, North Auckland, in 1920, having swum out 75 meters or more in swift currents to rescue the people clinging to trees. Five less fortunate people died.
Other medals include a rare 1958 specimen New Zealand Cross, estimate $2500 and rare New Zealand Medal pair awarded to Lieutenant W H Free in the New Zealand Wars, estimated at $NZ 7000, together with his framed commissions. Free fought in both the 1845 and 1860’s campaigns. There are many European North American and other World award and historical medals.

Lot 555. Fleming Fifty Pounds 1956-67, serial R131656, P162c, one main horizontal fold, several vertical folds. About 15 examples below the R199 number range known – rare. aVF. Estimate: $NZ 5,000.

Coins include 70 world and New Zealand gold coin lots and 97 other world coin lots including ancient, Islamic, Indian and modern coins. Banknotes include rare 1840’s New Zealand shinplaster private trader issues and an aVF NZ Fleming 50 Pounds early serial note R131656 estimated at $NZ 5,000.
