The auction week at Gorny & Mosch was full of surprises. From 5 to 8 March material ranging from Antiquity to Modern Times were auctioned. And one thing became apparent: Russian coins are brought back down to earth. The most expensive coin was an ancient specimen!

Auction house Künker has set a new record on the German market with 650,000 Euros. A Family Rouble of Russian Tsar Nicholas I struck in 1835 is the most expensive coin ever sold in Germany.

Kolbe & Fanning, USA-Gahanna, Ohio

Kolbe & Fanning’s characterization of their January 7, 2012 New York Book Sale as “Small but Mighty” has turned out to be quite apt. Of the 350 lots in the sale, 305 sold for a total of $514,000, or an average price per lot of nearly $1700.

In Heritage Auctions’ Orlando FUN Currency Event on January 5-20, 2012 the finest of three known $20 Nevada Red Seal notes from The Platte River Cash Hoard leads the way with $66,125 realized. A $10,000 note from the famous Binion’s Horseshoe display brings $63,250.

The Prospero Collection has been auctioned by Baldwin as part of the New York Sale XXVII and the total for all 642 lots is approximately US$ 25,000,000, more than double the pre-sale estimate. The catalogue cover coin broke all previous world records for an ancient Greek coin, selling for a phenomenal US$ 3,250,000!

On January 4-6 Heritage Auctions hold its U.S. Coins & Platinum Night FUN Signature® Auction at Orlando, Florida. Top seller were a 1793 Chain Cent and a $5 Large Date gold coin: both brought $1.38 million.

A pair of South African rarities led all lots as Heritage’s first auction of 2012 brought in over $9 million in New York, January 2 and 3. All prices include a 15% Buyer’s Premium. A unique bronze 1928-SA pattern sovereign realized $184,000, around four times its estimated value.

On December 14, 2011 Gorny & Mosch auctioned objects of the Waltz Collection. The collected items spoke of the collector’s good taste and his technical expertise: Not a single piece was returned, maximum prices were guaranteed. The end result was of 2.2 million Euros.

Münzenhandlung Fritz Rudolf Künker GmbH & Co. KG, D-Osnabrück

On December 13 and 14, 2011 the auction house Künker closed the year 2011 with an additional and unusual fifth Christmas auction all shining with gold. The one and only complete collection of gold coins of the German Empire worldwide and the first part of an important Ottoman collection resulted in record prices.
