140,000 euros for a Chinese dollar from 1896, 110,000 euros for a gold coin from Czechoslovakia from 1938 – the spring sale of Künker was full of surprises! Less surprising was: the pre-sale estimate of 5.7 million euros was easily surpassed by the hammer price amounting to 8.75 million euros.

Even though there were many remarkable results to be witnessed in the Gorny & Mosch auction sale conducted between 10 and 12 March 2014, one ought to be singled out: a set comprising four extremely rare gold coins from Czechoslovakia from 1938 that changed hands for 282,000 euros.

Spirited bidding was seen in the recent sale by Stephen Album Rare Coins on January 16-18, 2014. Their 18th auction included 2470 lots of Ancient, Islamic, Oriental, Indian, and general World Coins, as well as Numismatic Literature. The total price realized came to $1,047,521.

Heritage Auctions, USA-New York

A 14 ducat of Salzburg, minted in 1612 and so rare that it hasn’t been plated in at least a half century, sold for $211,500 to lead Selections from the Eric P. Newman Collection Part III Signature® Auction Jan. 14-16 in New York. The auction has surpassed $6 million.

Kolbe & Fanning, USA-New York

Kolbe & Fanning held their annual New York Book Auction on January 11, 2014. The two-session sale offered highlights from the libraries of Quentin Archer and Herbert Kreindler and was highly successful, with sell rates of well over 90% and hitting between 130% and 150% of total estimates.
