Casting medallions for beginners
October 5, 2017 – Each year, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering gives its graduating students a bronze medallion of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology seal.
These medallions are entirely prepared, cast, and finished by students in the Merton C. Flemings Materials Processing Laboratory using the lost-wax/investment casting process. All are welcome, no experience necessary. This video gives an idea on how the students experience working with molten metal.
If you want to learn more on this project read the article “A Labor of Love” by Michael Tarkanian who has overseen the making of the DSME medallions since 2006.
