The bracteates: An image of society in the High Middle Ages
January 11, 2018 – Bracteates are first-rate works of art and they can compete with the best examples of Romanesque sculpture. But they are even more than that. They are contemporary sources that tell us a lot about the self-conception of the ruling classes in the Middle Ages.
In this film, the beautifully preserved bracteates of the Professor Helmut Hahn collection serve to illustrate the medieval estate-based society. And the historical background in turn helps to better understand their imagery.
The Professor Helmut Hahn Collection will be offered at the Künker Berlin-Auction 301 on 1 Feburary 2018.
