This sale features the Edgar L. Owen Collection of bronzes of Magna Graecia and Sicily, with several rare Sicilian cities represented, as well as a number of coins from the important Thomas Virzi Collection.
Lot 24: BRUTTIUM, Medma. 4th century BC. Virzi 357 (this coin). VF. Rare. From the Edgar L. Owen Collection. Ex Thomas Virzi Collection, 357. Estimate $300.
Virzi was an assistant to the renowned Dr. Jacob Hirsch and sold a portion of his collection of Greek bronzes with that firm in 1907.
Lot: 74: SICILY, Messana. 338-318 BC. Caltabiano 709.14 (D1/R1) = Virzi 1147 (this coin). VF. From the Edgar L. Owen Collection. Ex Thomas Virzi Collection, 1147. Estimate $200.
Additional coins were sold privately after his death, as well as in Leu 6 (8 May 1973) and Malloy XVII (1 December 1980). The only complete record of the collection is a series of plates illustrating 2238 pieces.
