Coins from the Haeberlin Collection at Nomos’ webauction
Nomos AG announces its second webauction, obolos 2. The auction will close on Sunday, 14 June 2015 at 17:00 / 5 PM CET, beginning with lot 1 and continuing, every 30 seconds, for all 545 lots.
This sale contains 545 lots of coins and medals: there are interesting coins, nice coins, rare coins, coins with unusual pedigrees… Coin enthusiasts and numismatists of all types are bound to find more than just a few tempting items to bid on.
10: DANUBE REGION. 3rd-2nd century BC. Tetradrachm. Dembski 1339. OTA 422.1. Good very fine. Starting bid: 300 CHF.
The sale begins with a few lots of Celtic coins, primarily from Central Europe.
82: THESSALY, Pharsalos. Last quarter of 5th Century BC. Drachm. Lavva 93b (V47/R53; this coin). Good very fine. From the BCD collection. Starting bid: 2,500 CHF.
These are followed by a long series of Greek coins, ranging from Massalia to as far east as Baktria and then right back to North Africa: with everything from hemiobols through tetradrachms and bronzes there are interesting things to find.
193: Julius Caesar, Denarius, 47-46 BC. Babelon (Julia) 10. Crawford 458/1. Sydenham 1013. Extremely fine. From a Collection of a Swiss numismatist. Starting bid: 750 CHF.
Then come Roman Republican (including some very nice denarii) and then a long series of imperial coins that taper off well into the Byzantine period. There are some curious coins of the Dark Ages, some miscellaneous medieval and, finally, a lot of two intriguing white metal English geographical medals.
19: CAMPANIA, Neapolis. Circa 320-300 BC. Didrachm. HN Italy 571. Sambon 439. SNG ANS 318. Good very fine. From the collection of E. J. Haeberlin (1847-1925). Starting bid: 550 CHF
Even the pedigrees of some of these coins are interesting: once again there are a few coins that were in the collection of the great German scholar-collector, E. J. Haeberlin (1847-1925). None of these coins are fabulous rarities in the highest condition, the kind of coins many people think are the only ones those great collectors of the past collected; rather, they are just coins that caught his eye and were acquired because he thought them worth collecting. That’s what all collectors do, and have always done. And when you acquire one, you can have the pleasing feeling that one of the great collectors of the past valued your coin just as much as you do now.
