Ancient quality coins at reasonable prices

The Live Auction 7 of Naville Numismatics Ltd. will take place on the internet and will start closing on Sunday 11th May 2014, at 18.00 GMT (UK time), when the Live session will begin.
Absentee bids before the start of the Live session can be left now and up until Sunday 11th May 2014, at 18.00 GMT (UK time), exclusively through Naville’s website.

The auction features a selection of 248 lots of Greek, Roman and Byzantine coins, selected with the contribution of NAC’s experts.

13: Sicily, Aluntium. Bronze, late 4th century. Calciati 5 var. An apparently unpublished variety. Good very fine. Starting bid: GBP 120.

The sale begins with a series of coins from Magna Graecia and Sicily featuring rare bronzes including Aluntium, Thermae Himerenses, Panormos, Segesta and Syracuse.

9: Lucania, Metapontum. Nomos, 340-330. SNG ANS 412 (this obverse die). Traces of overstriking, otherwise very fine. Starting bid: GBP 700.

The highlights of this part of the sale are an interesting Nomos of Metapontum signed by Kal, a Thurium dinomos and a Syracuse didrachm. For continental Greece it is worth noting a small selection of tetradrachms of Athens, as well as a choice of tetradrachms from the Alexander III.

129: Roman Republic. C. Vibius Varus. Denarius, circa 42. Crawford 494/37. Area of weakness on reverse, otherwise extremely fine. Starting bid: GBP 800.

The Roman part of the sale boasts an interesting series of Roman Republican denarii, including a Vibius Varus denarius, an attractive denarius of Marcus Antonius and a group of Roman Republican bronzes from the Italo Vecchi Sale 3, 1996.

139: Roman Empire. In the name of Antonia, wife of Nero Claudius Drusus. Denarius, circa 41-45. RIC Claudius 68. Extremely fine. Starting bid: GBP 3,000.

The Imperial part of the auction includes a rare denarius of Antonia in excellent condition with lovely cabinet tone, a remarkable sestertius of Gaius with a delightful portrait, and a nicely preserved as of Agrippa.

The above selection is in line with Naville Numismatic’s goal of providing quality coins at a reasonable price, operating exclusively through electronic channels.
