Frankfurter Münzhandlung Auction 156

As part of their long-standing tradition, the auction sales of Frankfurter Münzhandlung have offered both fascinating pieces and collections from medieval and modern times as well as from antiquity.

In line with this, the auction house already auctioned off small runs of ancient numismatic items in its auction sales 154 and 155. Now Frankfurter Münzhandlung presents an interesting collection of ancient coins with 500 Greek, Roman and Byzantine specimens in the upcoming auction 156. The collection has been in private possession for decades. Therefore, it contains pieces with nice patina and well-known provenances. The focus here is certainly on the Roman Republic and the Roman imperators and emperors.

 

Ancient Coins

There is no need to point out to collectors of such specimens how fascinating the “classical” depictions on ancient coins are. Those who are not mainly interested in collecting this period may be encouraged too to let themselves be enchanted and convinced by this “classicism” through a detailed study of the (print or online) catalogue.

Modern Coins

The chapter on ancient numismatics is followed by more than 400 lots with modern coins. In addition to a small and fine selection of extraordinary, beautiful and rare individual pieces, the auctions of Frankfurter Münzhandlung always offer exquisite series and outstanding collections. This year there is a selection of issues form Jülich-Kleve-Berg. Whether it be goldgulden, ducats or magnificent gold medals – many pieces of this collection are very rare and beautiful and often only a few specimens of them are known.

Extremely rare, in addition to the four known specimens in the coin trade, according to Suchier, there is only one specimen each to be found in the museums of Kassel, Vienna and Berlin.   • Lot 667: Sayn-Wittgenstein. Johann von Sayn-Wittgenstein-Hohenstein 1634-1657. Taler 1656, Minden. 28.66g. M.-J./V. 102. Dav. 7670. Very rare. Fine toning. Extremely fine. Estimate: 12,000 EUR.
  • Lot 811: Haiti. Henri Christophe as King of Northern Haiti, 1811-1820. Crown 1811 / An 8. 30.67g. Silver pattern / Essai en argent. KM X11. Original strike, very rare. Splendid patina. Extremely fine to FDC. Estimate: 3,500 EUR.

  • Lot 858: Poland. First Republic, 1918-1939. 100 zlotych 1925, Warsaw. Silver pattern. Copernicus. Edge inscription: SALUS REIPBLICAE SUPREMA LEX. Parchimowicz 167 A. KM Pn282. Very rare, only 100 specimens minted. NGC MS62*. Estimate: 5,000 EUR.
  • Lot 902: Russia. Peter I, 1682-1725. Ducat (Chervonets) 1710, Moscow, Kadashevsky Mint. 3.43g. Diakov 331 (R4). Bitkin 14 (R3). Fr. 89. Very rare. 300 roubles according to Petrov. With collector punch “C” (Hutten-Czapski). Very fine. Estimate: 25,000 EUR.

 

The printed catalogue 156 of Frankfurter Münzhandlung with its 900 lots and a total estimate of 800,000 euros was sent to customers at the beginning of October. All pieces can also be found online, where you can also benefit from larger-scale depictions.

The auction sale will again take place following the auctions of Münzenhandlung Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. The venue for both sales – the auctions of Peus and of Frankfurter Münzhandlung – is the Flemings Selection Hotel, Frankfurt-City, Eschenheimer Tor 2, 60318 Frankfurt am Main.

Viewing is possible until October 31 at the premises at Bornwiesenweg 34 in Frankfurt a. M. and from November 1 on at the auction venue.
