Corinphila to Offer The Van Erp Collection
On 2 and 3 October 2020, the Corinphila Veilingen auction house is offering a truly unique collection of rare and high-quality coins and medals in a special auction: “The Van Erp Collection”. This outstanding collection was put together by Dr. J.P. van Erp over a period of more than 40 years and combines numismatic rarities from the Netherlands and Europe in great variety. Since the 1970s, “The Van Erp Collection” has lain untouched in the vaults of the heirs and now the opportunity to acquire these rare treasures is offered for the first time.
The “Van Erp Collection” has its origins in the 1930s and was assembled over a lifetime with considerable expertise and the highest standards of rarity and quality. Dr. J.P. van Erp was a physician and an enthusiastic collector throughout his life. He acquired his first coin at the age of ten and he developed into a specialist and researcher who left his mark in many ways. Among other things he was a well-known author, gave lectures on numismatic subjects and was always a competent and welcoming contact person. Van Erp was also the first point of contact for the Dutch authorities when it came to “finds” and new discoveries. Over many decades he researched and acquired many unique items, among others from Jacques Schulman in Amsterdam, with whom he often collaborated and shared his knowledge. Dr. J.C. van Erp was responsible for various research projects which, in addition to his collection, are still important today as van Erp’s numismatic legacy. Furthermore, until his death in 1972 he was also passionate about literature, which he collected in a specialised manner, creating an impressive private library.
Corinphila Veilingen documents the life’s work of Dr. J.C. van Erp in an impressive special catalogue for the upcoming auction. The catalogue can already be regarded as a reference work, as it contains many rarities and special features as well as valuable specialist contributions, including one interesting discovery by van Erp.
Collectors can look forward to many highlights on 232 pages, including various classical coins with portraits of Roman emperors, an extensive selection of Brabant coins with many exceptional pieces, and many rarities of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In addition, Dutch and European historical medals, with a large selection of papal medals, and an impressive collection of numismatic literature are also included.
Interested parties can also find the complete contents of the auction on the Internet with more than 4,000 high-resolution images in the online catalogue. Participation in the auction is convenient and free of charge from home using the proven “Online Live Bidding” system.
