Ernst Herzfelder was the director – with his uncle Robert – of the Viennese brewery Robert & Ernst Herzfelder & Co. A wealthy collector, his Roman coins were sold anonymously by Jacob Hirsch (auction XXIX – November 1910) and Brüder Egger (auction XLIII – April 1913), though his over-900 coins of Hadrian went to the Kunsthistorischer Museum. He was the uncle of the scholarly marchand-amateur Hubert Herzfelder (1911-1964), who had trained as a banker.

In 1910, Jacob Hirsch auctioned off a large portion of the Herzfelder Collection anonymously in his auction 29.
