November 15, 2018 – At the turn of the year, on January 1, 2019, the archaeological and historical Musée cantonal d’archéologie et d’histoire (MCAH) and the numismatic Musée monétaire cantonal (MMC) will merge and establish one single museum. This new museum, called Musée cantonal d’archéologie et d’histoire, will have 2.7 million Swiss Francs available in funds and will retain the MCAH’s logo. The present MCAH director, Lionel Pernet, will also manage the new museum.
The role of numismatics
The numismatic collection will remain a separate department. A chief curator, who is also set take over the position of deputy museum director, will be in charge of the collection.
Increasing cooperation and eventual merger
Between 2011 and 2015, the museums already intensified their cooperation. Numismatists could take note of the cooperation’s fruitfulness in 2017 when the book „Les Celtes et la monnaie“ was published jointly by both museums.
Each museum can look back on long histories dating back to the middle of the 19th century. The merger will ensure the future of both institutions well into the 21st century.
