October 16, 2012 – The programme is taking shape for the 2nd Coin Conference, which takes place March 12-13 2013 at the Palace Hotel in Berlin.
Unlike other coin-related events, which concentrate on collectors coins and the numismatic market, the Coin Conference is the only one to cover purely circulating coins, and specifically circulating coins as part of countries’ currency management strategies, with a focus on design, security, cost-effective production, handling, distribution and management in circulation. The principal audience is central banks and issuing authorities, along with mints and vendors of materials, equipment and systems for handling, processing, verification, counting, distribution and recycling.
The papers confirmed so far include the impact of removing lower value coins and ‘rounding-up’ prices by the Dutch central bank; the US$1 coin versus note from the Federal Reserve; the health impact of coins from the Karolinska Institute; meeting central bank requirements for inspection and quality control from the Casa de Moneda de Chile, multi-clad ‘flip flop’ coins – from low cost to high end security from the Bavarian State Mint; quality control and counterfeit characterisation of coins from the Lebanese Atomic Energy Commission; the road to high secure coins from the Mint of Finland; the new Colombia coin series from the Central Bank of Colombia; and trends in demand for cash from the International Association of Currency Affairs.
There will be number of case studies from around the world on new coin issues, with a focus on reducing costs of production and transportation, introducing new security features, public education and new policies to optimise coin usage. A comparison of the durability of different plated coins will be presented, as will papers on public/private partnership for coin circulation, effective recirculation, redenomination, the EC’s impact assessment on removing low denominations and public perception of coins.
