October 25, 2012 – The PGA TOUR organizes the world’s premier and highest-endowed tournament for professional golfers. The Cook Islands are issuing a commemorative golf ball silver coin designed by Coin Invest Trust. This official PGA TOUR coin is a testament to the tradition of sports; it features a miniature golf ball inset and is delivered in a stylish golf ball box.

Depicted on the front of the coin is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the Cook Islands’ official head of state. In addition to featuring the lettering of both the queen’s name and the name of the issuing country, the nominal value of 5 dollars is also indicated.
The back of the coin features a colourful depiction of a golf course scene. In the foreground, a player has just driven his ball and is watching it. To his upper right a three-dimensional, miniature golf ball is inserted into the coin and underneath it is the year of minting, 2012. The PGA TOUR logo is inset on the upper left. The inscription ‘Heritage – Sportsmanship – Respect’ runs along the coin’s upper edge.
During the 1960s, golf experienced a worldwide boom. The number of professional U.S. players grew so significantly that, in 1968, an umbrella organization was needed that could organize professional tournaments on a suitable scale. With this, the PGA TOUR was born in Ponte Vedra Beach, USA.

Every year, the PGA TOUR stages its golf tournaments on three levels. Its prize money of a total of over 270 million U.S. dollars not only makes it by far the highest-endowed tournament series in the world, but also makes it a huge draw for golf players worldwide. Eligibility criteria are, understandably, extremely demanding. It’s fair to say that the PGA TOUR tournament spectaculars have established themselves as possibly the most important 18-hole sporting event to grace grass.
As staggering as that final prize money may seem, it’s important to remember that the PGA TOUR is itself a non-profit organization, and any positive revenues generated from the tournaments are donated. These donations support thousands of local charities, most of them in cities where the tournament events are held.
And the sheer mass appeal of the tournament series is almost as impressive as the winner bonus itself: event coverage is broadcast in 225 countries, and approximately 715 million households passionately follow along year after year when the PGA TOUR season begins.
